2009 Sunset Hills Children's Foundation Scholarship Recipient:
Mare'a lost his mom in 2004 at the tender age of 12. Throughout his life she
was chronically ill, yet always found time for him and his sisters. It was
Mare'a who found her dead on an early Saturday morning and had to break
into her room to get to her. When he felt her face, he remembers feeling a
cold shock run through his fingers. Since her death, Mare'a has lived with
his sister and brother-in-law. Thanks to the person his mom raised him to
be, he stayed out of trouble and kept up his grades. He is now proud to be
the first in his family to attend a four-year institution at Cal State
University Fresno!
~ I am truly thankful and appreciative for Sunset Hills blessing me with
this scholarship as I would be in debt and stressed out of my mind with not
only school work but how I was going to find the money in these hard times
to pay for school as well as a place to live. With the price of tuition
going up and rent for my apartment I don't think I would have been able to
pay for all these things with out taking out a loan and having to find a job
as well. The scholarship paid for my tuition and I was able to use my
financial aid on the necessities such as school materials, books, groceries
and so on. Many of my friends have loans and are stressed out. They are not
able to fully focus on school because their loans don't cover the cost of
the rising prices of tuition, or are short on rent and can't find a job to
help pay for bills that are being thrown at them.So thank you once again
Sunset Hills for blessing me with this scholarship and making my path to
receiving my bachelors degree in Criminal Justice obtainable.
Sincerely,
An Extremely Grateful College Student,
Mare'a M. E. Armstrong
